Japanese Knotweed can be easily confused with a number of other plants commonly found in gardens. Before you panic, check out our simple identification guide.

Japanese Knotweed dies back and lays dormant in winter, sending out fresh shoots to regrow in spring. Although most easily identified during the summer months, dead canes and early shoots can be idenfied in the winter and spring.

  • Characteristic leaves, flat at the back
  • Leaves grow alternatly on stem
  • Red stem on mature plants
  • Bamboo like noads on stems
  • Small white flowers in Late summer to early Autumn
  • Drops leaves and dies back in winter leaving dead upright canes

Plants Commonly mistaken as Knotweed

  • Bindweed: Common garden weed. Identified by climbinging vine like habit, arrow shaped leaves and white trumpet-like flowers
  • Russian Vine: Climbing plant, can hybridise with Japanese Knotweed although the hybrids are less invasive and rarely survive.
